Crosfields claim league title!!
Grange 1 - 4 Crosfields
Crosfields secured the league title with a 4 -1 away win at Grange FC, the teams 15th league win of the season in 17 games played.
Knowing a win was enough to leap frog league leaders Crowell to win the title, Crosfields started the game on the front foot. However, early chances were restricted - not helped by a poor playing surface and an opposing team who were happy to sit back and defend in numbers.
The first real effort came from Lewis Brocklehurst who stabbed the ball wide from close range following an in-swinging Dimeloe corner. However, the deadlock was finally broken, when another Dimeloe set piece was half cleared to the edge of the area, where striker Sam Fellows controlled the ball before hitting a well struck effort into the back of the net via the underside of the bar - the strikers 26th goal of an impressive season.
Crosfields soon doubled their lead - again from a Dimeloe corner, where this time skipper Lewis Brocklehurst was on hand to turn home from close range, despite the efforts of both the home goalkeeper and defender on the line.
Crosfields allowed their opponents back into the game rather than force their early advantage home. During a spell of pressure, Grange struck the frame of the Crosfields goal with a free header inside the area. Defender Jacob Gallop, who has been in fine form of late, was on hand on two further occasions to thwart a Grange opportunity on goal.
The last chance of the half fell to Jacob Dimeloe whose speculative volley just cleared the home teams bar.
Harry Thatcher produced a moment of quality at the start of the second half when he skipped away from his marker before sending in a well weighted cross to the unmarked Sean Farrell who side footed home with ease to give his team a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Crosfields continued to stroll through the game and were thankful to keeper Dimeloe, who had taken over in goal for the 2nd half, when he got a strong hand to a well-struck effort on to the bar.
However, Crosfields continued to look dangerous moving forward and were denied a 4th goal of the game when Sam Fellows near post flick was deemed not to have crossed the line.
The game then saw two penalties awarded, one to each team. Firstly defender Alex Crawley brought down an opposing striker, who converted the resultant spot kick, before a handball in the Grange area saw Sean Farrell coolly convert his penalty into the top left hand corner for 4-1, his second of the game and fourth of the season.
The last action of the game saw Lewis Brocklehurst strike the bar with an effort from just inside the area before the game was called to an end and hand Crosfields the league title with one game left to play.
Crosfields have now scored 69 league goals in their 17 games - the second highest goals total in all six divisions - and will be going for goals in their final fixture at home to Culcheth.
