May 10 2010, 3:40 am Right from the word go Crosfields attitude and commitment seemed to be bang on and the boys appeared to want to give it a real go. There was good passing and movement and some good pressure at the right end of the field. The lesson however that we never learnt from the last time we played this team was that they are very strong on the counter attack.
This was certainly the case today as the opening goal even though it was very sloppy, followed a counter attacking break. The second goal wouldn't have been stopped by 3 keepers never mind Matty as it flew high into the roof of the net from a great half volleyed shot from the edge of the area following a corner.
The third goal was a copybook sucker punch. With Crosfields high up the pitch and pressing on, quick passing, movement and a perfectly timed run and pass allowed another break away with the run coming from inside his own half. The cool chip over Matty's head was top drawer and difficult for the boys to stomach as it wasn't as if they were being played off the park or overrun - they were just very good at breaking away and finishing.
The boys never dropped their heads though and it was time for a breakaway goal of our own as Matty Spencer won a strong tackle and released Alex Hudspeth with a good long pass. Alex raced through from just inside their half and just when you thought he had over run it unleased a wicked shot that gave the goalie no chance. It was game well and truly back on and the goal certainly lifted the spirits.
The second half was even better in terms of passing, moving tackling and football played. 4 goals conceded doesn't do the defensive centre half partnership of Charlie Lloyd and Dan Mahoney justice as they were solid throughout with Charlie stepping out and enjoying his game in the outfield. Dan won the man of the match with an assured performance full of good cover defence.
Break away goals were again the order of the day as Crosfields leaked goal after goal. There could have been a bit of respite but for a Lewis Snape missed penalty, but no to worry he'll score the next.
