December 15 2009, 4:50 pm On a cold and frosty morning we were lying in fully anticipating a cancelled game on Saturday but a text at 8:00am said we were good to go....this didn't unfortunately get through to Brazil who seemed as if they were still in bed!
The stage was set for a win, Appleton bottom of the league and really struggling this season on a perfectly flat pitch in perfect crisp conditions. Jack Hall set about the game as if he wanted to win from the start chasing everything down and looking very sharp, maybe because Jack was warmest in his gloves and tracky bottoms!
Appleton though withstood the early pressure and managed a break away goal on their very first attack, seeming to blunder their way through and somehow squeeze one in despite 8 or 9 Brazilians in the box. Ok now time to get out of bed and spark into life! Well the revival started well - the ever lively Jack made a chance from nothing and slotted past the world's smallest goalie...
That was pretty much as good as it got in that first half though as Appleton grew and grew in confidence with seemingly more desire and commitment than the visitors and more eagerness to get a rare win. The 2nd goal was coming throughout the half as more and more opportunities were squandered by the home team. Eventually the goal came on the stroke of half time and Appleton deserved it.
A now familiar half time dressing down saw 5 changes that would have been more if there were more subs was the catalyst for a much improved opening to the second half with the boys finally knuckling down and looking to pressure the opposition and get back into the game. Alas it wasn't to be and Appleton handled the pressure well and then looked to push on themselves to get a third.
Much improvement needed for the last game of the year at home to Rainhill. Nathan Jeffrey was awarded man of the match for a solid job at the back, good performances from James Smalley who never gave up, Lewis Wiseman and Jack Hall. Charlie Lloyd also returned and gave a strong second half performance.
